Smile 1990 Cherokee XJ New To Me!

Hello to you!

Finally, I am getting to realize my interest in what I considered the "boxey" Cherokee! These Jeeps have always interested me and I found one I like and plan to drive for fun and to work on the worst days of the year.

It's a bone stock '91 Laredo with 120,000 original miles on it.
First I tried to buy a park rangers 1990 Cherokee but it just was not meant to be and the deal fell through when I went to pick it up!
I'm pleased I found this one and it's better!

Might I enlist the Gurus here to advise me what a good sensible / streetable / usable build for the XJ is?
My last 4x4 was a full size 1987 Chevy - it was fun to wheel and I miss that freedom.

Based on what I have seen so far, I was thinking a Skyjacker standard 3" lift, some 30 or 31"s, a Volant air intake and Borla exhaust.

Do I need to throw gears at it to run 31's? How about 30's? Should I just do a cheapy 2" lift and run some 29"s and leave the stock gears?

My main use will be driving snow and ice in the worst days of work, up a winding mountain road with 17% grades. My fun use will be pulling my jetski to a lake or exploring some average off-road trails.

Anyhoo, thanks for such a nice forum, and I hope to hear some sage advice from you all who have ridden, broken and driving these jeeps hard and put them away wet or not at all! Thanks.

Welcome, looks clean, a 3" lift with 31"s or 2"bb with 30"s would be a good starting point for a dd. I would recommend getting tires rated well for snow use as I think they'll really help out in a slick winter climate. For towing I would recommend a trans cooler if it's an auto and dose'nt have one already. From there the sky's the limit.

Welcome to CF. Nice find on a great looking Jeep. I agree regarding the 3" lift, 31" MS treaded tires, and a good trans cooler. You'll probably be fine w/the stock gearing with the driving you stated IMO.

Cool Crazy Mix Up Works Out Great!

Hello all,

THANK YOU to those who welcomed and replied - great advice, and I have found the "Lift" thread - good stuff!

Well if you are scratching your head about my first post wondering what happened, no you are not crazy!

When I went to pick up the 1990 base model I had originally purchased, the deal fell through at the last minute for a couple of reasons.

It turned out to be a blessing in disguise though, because I ended up finding a newly listed 91' Laredo with a little more mileage but even cleaner! I have edited the posting with the correct picture.

Anyhoo, Thanks again and I look forward to learning and contributing here!
