I looked at a buddies xj and the taillights are just a little different. A little modification and it works great. I put a spring on and it bends back below the roofline no problem.

i used the light bolt as one mounting point and then stabilized it by drilling another hole to the right of it and screwing it into the body.

I was going to use the light bolt but as you can see in my picture it has webs on it. Don't know how it is on other zjs just know that's mine. I could have ground them off I guess just as easily. Either way it works great. Love it.

I have the webs also, I placed it under the plastic. you have to be carful not to over tighten or you will risk cracking the plastic resulting in a trip to the junk yard for a replacement. yours looks good, I did not think about placing it on top I took it as though the intentions of the designer was to mount it through the light bolt. if I end up cracking my light housing I will remount it up where you currently have it.
