Ok ~ donor Jeep diff. Sorry it's only the bottom but can't push the wife for any more pics! Both have 10 bolts and I can see other Jeep pic the diff is more squared on the bottom. This one looks more rounded on the bottom. ID?
Got it ~ How do I check the gearing? If they don't match how do I change them and am I changing the rear gears or the front gears or both? Looking at putting a LSD into the rear so don't I have to change the gearing when I put in the LSD?

Now I've got to get cleaning on it and find my disc brake parts. Hopefully my donor car has the exact same diff; waiting on my wife to send me a picture of that one to determine what I've got. If it's the same then I'll have it to sell when I get all the other stuff stripped off for my 2WD to 4WD conversion.
That depends on what year XJ you have. 96 and earlier were a 27 spline axleshafts and weren't any stronger than the D35. 97 and newer were 29 spline axleshafts and arguably rival the Dana 44 in strength.

1996 is the half year. Some have 27 splines some have 29. From others, the only way to know which you have is to pull a shaft and count.
But like you said, to be safe, 96 27 spline and 97+ 29 splined.
