1987 XJ 4x4
This has been my toy for the past 4 years. My father owned it before me. He gave it to me, stock, as a retirement gift when I retired from the Navy. It's street legal but I don't use it as a daily driver. I've performed the following modifications and upgrades. All the work was done by me.
- Engine is the AMC 242 I6 4.0 Renix. Stock, no performance or aftermarket upgrades. Regular maintenance completed on time. Runs GREAT!
- Peugeot BA-10/5 5-speed manual transmission. Stock, no performance or aftermarket upgrades.
- NP231 transfer case. I installed an Advance Adapters Slip Yoke Eliminator (SYE).
- Rear axle is a 29 spline Chrysler 8.25 with new seals, Aussie Locker, Lube Locker gasket and a RuffStuff Specialties Differential Cover. 3.55 axle ratio.
- Front axle is a Dana 30 solid axle (vs the axle disconnect), new seals, Aussie Locker, Lube Locker gasket, Rusty's Offroad Diff Guard Skid Plate. 3.55 axle ratio.
- Front suspension is Rusty's Offroad 4.5 inch springs with a 1" spacer, BDS shocks, Rusty's Offroad Adjustable Lower Control Arms with heim joints and RC Quick Disconnects on the Anti-Sway Bar. Gives 5" of lift.
- Rear suspension is a custom spring pack, BDS shocks, Rusty's Offroad axle shim (for proper angle), Iron Rock Offroad Adjustable Boomerang Lift Shackles, Liquid Iron Industries Shackle Relocation Brackets. Currently setup for 5" of lift.
- 33x12.5 Hercules Trail Digger Mud Terrain tires on 15 inch American Racing wheels. Less than 1500 miles on these tires!
- New 20 gallon fuel tank with factory skid plate and a new fuel pump! I replaced the tank because the old one rusted through. I replaced the pump because it was original and I didn't want to have to drop the tank again in the near future.
- Fenders cut, folded and sealed for clearance for new tires and suspension.
- New power steering pump.
- Upgraded power steering box from a mid-2000 era Durango. Refurbished and installed with the new power steering pump and pitman arm.
- Upgraded steering linkage from stock to 1" thick steering linkage from mid-2000's Jeep Grand Cherokee V8.
- Both drive shafts are from a mid-2000 era Jeep Grand Cherokee V8. All new Spicer U-joints.
- A/C compressor has been converted to an Onboard Air Compressor with a 1 gallon tank, pressure switches, safety release valve, etc. One of the best mods I ever did!
- Cooling system converted from problematic closed-loop system to open-loop system. All new hoses and cable clamps installed. Heater works great for Winter time wheeling!!
- New blower motor.
- Custom front bumper with 2" hitch receiver, tow-bar tabs and removable license plate mount. Tow bar included!
- Custom tool box mounted in the bed. TOOLS NOT INCLUDED!!
- Custom roof cross-rails to hold a full size spare. I never bought a spare but the rails are there!
- Replaced original instrument cluster (idiot lights) with an instrument cluster from a 1989 Cherokee that has gauges. All senders replaced too.
- REMOVEABLE doors! Simply lift the doors off and set them aside before you go wheeling. My second favorite mod!
- Upgraded headlights. Aftermarket housings with brand new zenon bulbs. Upgraded headlight wiring harness.
- CB radio.
I only use premium synthetic fluids. RedLine, Mobil-1, Royal Purple, etc.
I have NEVER rolled this Jeep nor have I been in any accidents. I have pulled plenty of Wranglers out of trouble though!
In the interest of full disclosure, the speedometer and odometer do not work since swapping the instrument clusters. Therefore the mileage will be incorrect, but not by much as I only used her a couple times a year when wheeling in North Carolina.
