ZJ tyrod compatible?

So I'm thinkin bout doing the upgrade. My understanding is just the tyrod needs to be swapped, but I remember seein somewhere that there is a problem with the connection between the XJ drag link and the ZJ tyrod. Can someone clarify this for me. My plan is to hit the junkyard for the tyrod and put new ends.

If you're doing new Tie Rod ends, just buy the ZJ ends.

Drag link is the same. Tie rod is a bit stronger and a direct swap. Not bulletproof though, so don't expect it to be

The v8 ones you want the inline 6 are the same as the xjs.

How bout the dampener for the "TYROD"? Is it the same, or do I need to get one for a ZJ?

andrewmp6 03-11-2017 07:48 AM

The steering stabilizer ?Its just a shock and the xj one works,But a lot of us don't run one at all its good at masking steering problems.

samiam 03-11-2017 05:14 PM

Hey thanks I just looked at it again and see the stabilizer is attached the the drag link but if not needed... it is gone.

andrewmp6 03-11-2017 11:04 PM

Some people run one but i wouldn't spend a ton on one just a cheapo oem one is all you need.

if your going to put the v8 ZJ tie rod on then a new drag link is worthwhile when your at it. moog has a good set up. all bolt on.

RegularGuy 03-12-2017 01:34 PM

So, bolt-on, no modification "upgrades" from the V8 ZJ are

Tie Rod and end (get the long rod from the JY for cheap and a new End from the parts store?)
Drag Link
Sway bar (Need mounts, bushings from parts store)
Will the stock XJ sway bar links work or will you need the ZJ's as well?

there's a few ZJs at the nearby JY so if its effective and simple i might go and grab some parts

I know the ZJ Pitman arm gives a 1" drop but i dont know if this would be helpful for those of us at stock or overland height.

The tie rod and drag link for the v8 zj are just beefy versions of the rest of the cherokees. Sway bars won't change by adding this set up.

See! This is what I'm talkin bout. If the drag link and ends are good on a XJ then there is no need for a new one that is the same...right?

all i know is what ive read, that the tie rod on the XJ is hollow and the V8 ZJ is solid. one could assume the drag link on the V8 is also more substantial.

i have also read in a thread where a guy grabbed the front sway bar and mounts from a V8 ZJ and got new bushings from the parts store, and it dropped into his MJ. he said it gave him noticeably improved on-road performance.

Sway bars are not steering components and do not affect you choice of stock steering linkages for your application. The gentleman that bought new bushings probably noticed a difference because they were new.
