zj alternator upgrade to renix xj... HELP
I upgraded my RENIX Cherokee INTERNALLY REGULATED to a 120amp zj EXTERNALLY REGULATED. my issue is OVERCHARGING!!
VR125 chrysler voltage regulator.
96 zj alternator
All new 4 gage wire.
VR hooked up to ING in the fuse panel to the same wire that goes to the battery and to the positive of the alternator. Neg is from VR to alternator and to ground. ( block ) and from the positive battery post to an ANL 150 amp fuse straight to the alternator battery post.
I have disconnected the VR and i get 11v from the alt at the battery and sounds good. Hook everything up and i charge at 14.3 at ideal give it gas and i here a loud squeal from the alt and it shoots up to 18v. Tried everything i can think of and googled a sh"t ton. No real luck with RENIX everything is 91 and new...
Please any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jason

i dunno about that regulator... i have a 96 alternator in my renix MJ... only because i have a 96 XJ with a lifetime warrantied alt
I used this link to help me through it... http://www.cherokeetech.com/VBull/sh...grade-problem&
I used the ford truck regulator... and this to buy the regulator... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chrysler-Dodge-Plymouth-External-Voltage-Regulator-/230375680398?hash=item35a375e98e&item=230375680398&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr#ht_3223wt_234
See if all that lines up the same as what you got...

Same VR that I have. I read the links that you gave me the pics have been removed to show how he hooked it up. Everything that I have seen has been correct. Did you have to cut the plug from the old alterantor? when you did your upgrade? did you remove the wire fromt he alternator to that fuse box looking thing? I took mine off and rean straight wire with a anl fuse instead. do you think that would make a difference?
