Default Yoke to use for Hack and Tap

So these hack and tap kits must be using an off-the-shelf yoke thats drilled for the retaining bolt. I can't see the sellers of these kits designing and manufacturing a whole new yoke for this.

So what yoke are they using? 'Cause I can get the yoke and drill it myself....

Any ideas?

Why would they not? HnT's sell for around $100 a piece and basically consist of a yoke, a bolt, and sometimes a drill bit and tap. Seems pretty profitable to me to manufacture a yoke. I'm not saying there aren't off the shelf yokes that are used or could be used as a raw material and then machined by the manufacturer, but it's not like they would be a complicated to design or make. I'm sure if you wanted to you could buy a 1310 yoke with the same diameter as your slip yoke, cut it to length, drill the center hole, then perform the rest of the steps that are normally associated with a HnT. But that sounds like a hell of a lot of work that really wouldn't save you much money at all. If I had a lathe I might consider it just for ****s and giggles, but I don't think it would be worth your time.

Wouldn't need a lathe if you got a chop saw to cut to length. Hell, you cut the shaft with a grinder while the engine is running and shaft is turning; before doing that why not slide the yoke most of the way on that shaft, secure it with duct tape, spin it and score it with the grinder. Then its just to throw it in the vise and finish it off.

Drilling a hole in the end would be easy with a drill press. Neither cut is critical...so a few thou one way or the other would probably be fine. Taint rocket surgery.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the position and angle of the hole fairly critical?

The yoke is centered by the mating splines. The bolt is just to keep it from flying off.

I guess that's true. I would be worried about it not being perfect, but I'm used to machining specs that are +/- a few microns.

I read a thread a couple years ago, where someone did their own SYE. The yoke they used (same as listed above) originally was used on some early model corvettes. I don't know what else they might have come on, but those were specifically mentioned.

Edit: 63-64 corvette with Muncie 4 speed tranny. Good luck finding one of those in the junkyard!!

They came on some late 70's & early 80's GM. Mostly passenger cars.
