Broke the cross member on the rear passenger side of my 2001 XJ. Sheet metals too thin to re weld to the body. Anybody built one and have the dimensions. Just looking for a rough idea on what I'm going to do with it.

I dont know what that means.A Xj cross member supports the t case and has nothing to do with shocks.Do you mean you broke an upper shock mount?Pics?

You must mean the shock bar, never heard of one breaking unless the XJs' really really rusty. X2 get us some pics so we know what you're dealing with!
PS...The sheet metal is not too thin to re-weld it if you know how to weld properly

No the jeeps not rusty bought and owned in Colorado, not enough humidity to rust, still has the original olive greenish primer or the bottom of the body.

I guess it would be the shock mounts. I called it a crossmember because it "crosses" the body over the axle and holds the rear shocks.

Not my picture but what has broken. I'm just going to take a 2"x2"x1/4" piece of angle iron and weld it to the body after removing these old shock mounts. Should hold up better. Ill post pictures when I'm done by the end of the week.

PS: I do know how to weld, thats why I'm a certified ASME welder for a company here in Colorado. Ill run a couple of cold passes to get the angle iron onto the bottom of the body then crunk up the voltage over the top of the cold passes to tie everything together. That way I'm not going to burn holes into the body and have plenty of thicker material to run hotter passes over.

humidity has nothing to do with rust... Rust comes from the salt on the road in the winter

This is what I'll be making but instead of the bolt up, it will be welded on.

A cheap way to make bar pin eliminators is if you had or have the rear sway bar take the mounts that are on the axle and use them. They are exactly the same

Default How did it turn out?

i was calling it a skirt,(offers about as much protection as) mine broke the spot welds and took a piece of the unibody frame rail out with it (passenger side as well), made new shock mounts welded to frame rails and welded that skirt back on without burning the carpet on the inside (keeps from rattling around as it has a muffler hanger on it). how did yours turn out? What caused it? I think mine might have been the shock was too tall and bottomed too quickly just hammering that skirt/apron out. With a shim for pinion angle my shock travel is a 2 inch difference between drivers and passenger side because of the stock lower mounts being one in front of axle and the other behind. Sorry for the long winded response, just curious what you think.

Humidity is absolutely an aspect of rust formation. Although salt is responsible for the majority of it.
