Default word to the wise(update)

for some reason you EVER think its a good idea to take the front axle shafts out and take the front drive shaft out and think your driving anywhere well you are extremely negative toe wrong. so if you havent guess in a bind after a long night of working on the truck a broken u joint cap(at 1am no one is open and no spares nor non abs) and tried to put in my Aussie locker and the PO broke the diff pin bolt off and forgot to tell me about it AWESOME, anyway yea moved the truck from the shop to house mabye a half mile.... and half way there BOOM passenger side wheel bearing split apart and your imagination can fill in the rest.....had a buddy witha flat bed come get me and tow me back to the garage at 4 am mind you from a quick assessment of the damage it doesn't look to bad, 2 new front wheel bearings $50 a piece, new caliper $25, caliper bolts $?, pads $20, rotor $30 , and hopefully this is it ill update tomorrow after a few .......anyways moral to the story always drive/move your truck with axle shafts in and tight if

sorry no pictures i was pretyy pissed off i did this and didnt think to take any

The stub shaft and hub nut are the only things that keep the unit bearing hub together. Never attempt to drive without a stub shaft installed.

I'm glad you weren't physically hurt

Look on the bright side... you have some shiny new parts on the front end.

if you have to drive without the axle shafts, you have to keep the stub shaft torqued down to the hub bearing and just stick a rag in the axle end to keep diff fluid from leaking out.

driving without the drive shaft is fine as long as it's not a full time 247 or 249 t-case.

consider yourself lucky. i have heard of people losing their lives from not leaving the stub shaft in.

So what we learned here is..

It is perfectly safe to run without a drive shaft front or rear and front axel shafts, in an XJ.. PROVIDED it is done correctly......

Exclamation

UPDATE:

here is the truck right after the flatbed dropped it off. we pushed the wheel back in the hub to get it on the truck.

here are the ONLY broken parts reused the wheel bearings so far so good. i had to bend the caliper mount ear back on place and get new pads and bolts

i also put my Aussie locker in while i was there it was very easy.

and here it is all done and back to normal..

i also go t a cb mount from 98plumcrazy

so all in all it only cost me about 60 to fix such a crazy break down
