WJ steering pump on Renix.
Anyone been here yet ? So a WJ pump housing is identical to Renix minus threaded holes. They are 5/16 which happens to be exactly the size for a 3/8 x 16 tap. So I tapped factory holes to 3/8 x 16. Brackets will be drilled out to 25/64 for pump mounting and adjustment slides. Swapped pressure fitting from spare Renix pump to WJ pump as there different. Cannot use Renix reservoir suction port is too small for WJ pump. Im using the 4.7 version witch also power a cooling fan on the WJ. Unsure what year Xj pump mounting changed as they dont require threading of holes Ive read its direct bolt up.
Been looking at the differences between 1989 XJ pressure hoses and 1999 XJ hoses. The top bends are different. The 1999 XJ reservoir is a lot closer in design to the 2002 Grand Cherokee reservoir . And 1999 XJ hose fits without and modification to upper bend. Also bought 1 foot of 7/16 fuel line 2 hose clamps and a 1/2 bolt to plug bigger return line on reservoir on WJ pump.

So, was able to get every thing on today. Works way better than anticipated. One finger steering on 38s. The mounting brackets had to be drilled out to 25/64s so 3/8 bolts would fit . Marked by red circles. Used a 1999 X J pressure hose . Bought three 3/8 x 16 x 1 bolts with lock washers to mount pump to metal adjusting bracket. Bought two - 3/8 x 16 x 1 3/4 bolts with flat washers and lock washers for mounting to aluminum bracket where it swivels for adjustment of belt. Used a piece of 7/16 fuel line and a 1/2 bolt to plug bigger return line on reservoir. Use pulley from stock pump. Dont really trust WJ pulley because no automatic tensioner is on a Renix.

Will a 2001 v8 wj with hydraulic fan be the ideal pump for this?
If so I'll be pulling one used tomorrow.
I already have a spare 1996 xj pump for the fittings and pulley.
1999 pressure line will be the only thing I'll need to buy.

As long as its dual return line style should work. The 4.0 model is said to be different pressure wise.

Excellent. Thank you for the info.
I will be using this in my 1989 and possibly connecting to the trans cooler in the new rad.
...unless there is a good reason not to run the return through the radiator trans fluid cooler.

Dont no if id do that radiator get pretty hot. Just a small cooler in front of ac condensor be best bet. Might find a cooler of a xj that would bolt right in.

Pulled the pump today.
Looks mint.
Was out getting a bumper and grill for a friend who hit a deer with his WJ.
This, and the 96 brake booster upgrade will be going onto my 89 at the same time in the near future.
I'll stick with the aux trans cooler for a ps cooler and keep it out of the rad, Thanks
