Default C 8.25 misbehaving

My c8.25 is not acting as it should. when taking off sometimes i will get power through 1st gear and then into second gear it feels like I am getting no power to the rear end like its slipping, not the transmission but the rear end itself. i had the diff cover off last month and I know there is nothing wrong with the internals before the lift and tire change. Before I did my lift and upgraded to 33" tires it did not do this but now it does. Most often it will do it after taking a right turn. it always feels like it is the right side of the axel that is slipping. It will do it when accelerating from a stop also. I am doing my best to describe what is going on but it is really tricky. I have an AW4 automatic. Have i killed my 8.25 already?

Does it also seem to do it in 4wd? Never heard of a rear end slipping unless all the teeth where sheared, which you said is not the case. Maybe take it out In 4wd and ser if it still does it. If it slips at all then it's your tranny, not your rear end.

Open carrier?

Its possible that one of the axle shafts have damaged splines. If only one side was that way when that side would be the side pulling it could slip. I don't know though. just a possibility.

sorry i havent checked this in a while, I opened up the diff cover and the fluid was fine, some metallic flecks on the cover but that was it, looked over the ring gear, spider gears, splines are fine. So I moved up the drive train, drive shafts are fine, transfer case is fine, so I came to the only conclusion I could, Transmission. At the rate this thing is progressing there is a high probability I will be pulling the trans at the end of the summer/fall wheeling season to spend the winter rebuilding it..... It is making the rear end shudder when it wont switch gears.

Yeah sounds like the torque converter might be acting up, I don't see how anything else could slip really.

Torque converter? How do you mean? I assumed the clutch pack for 1st to 2nd gear was giving up. One of the previous owners used this Xj as a tow vehicle, so I am assuming that is what is now killing my transmission

That makes more sense, I didn't know there were clutch packs with each gear

Bossokee,
could you elaborate on your previous point about he Torque Converter. I am beginning to suspect that it may have a hand in what is going on because i sometimes have issues taking off.

Torque converter could be going on you, or it could be some kind of electrical problem. My parents WJ was having tranny problems a while back, it would shift funny and sometimes just rev and slip like a bad torque converter. Turned out to be something wrong with the wiring inside the tranny. Do you have any CEL codes?

No not a single one. Sometimes when I take off It shudders and I have to let off the gas and ease back on, most of the time it shudders on a grade. Then it will slip trying to go into second and vibrate the drive train. If someone out there knows this, does the band in the aw4 control 2nd gear?

Hmm, this is a tricky one man. Something is definitely screwed up in the transmission though

Double check your fluid level first off, then add an extra quart and see if it improves. One of my older xjs had the exact same problems you describe and it had a warped trans case which allowed a leak between the case and the valve body. Adding an extra quart of fluid got me by for 6 months before I finally swapped the trans out.

My fluid level is good, I have pretty much pin pointed the problem. The band is slipping when attempting to engage. my only assumption is that the friction material is warn off it. but i could be entirely wrong on this one. Has anybody out there rebuilt one of these before. is it worth it? i have a fair tool collection so thats not really the issue. im sure there are 1 or 2 specialty tools i may need but i wouldnt mind getting them. a rebuild kit is about $400-450 vs a rebuilt aw4 for $1700
