Default Winch Options

Here's my scenario. I have a daily driver XJ that sees trails on the weekend. I have two options I'm considering. Get a winch mount front bumper with the winch mounted permanently obviously. Option 2, get a front bumper with a 2" receiver and a rear bumper with a 2" receiver and put the winch on a winch plate. I was thinking with the winch plate I could take it off during the week back and forth to work on my hour commute and save some MPG's. Thought I would run it by you guys to hear opinions and other ideas. Thanks, Mike

I personally would get a winch plate and winch and permanently mount it to the front. Its not going to save you that many MPG's if any, plus you wont have to be carrying with you and hooking it up all the time.
Thats just my .02 though.

That's how I'm planning to do mine also.

Nothing like someone getting stuck and having to try and 50 point turn in a tight trail in order to winch him out..

too many times i've been stuck and forward wasn't a option, i would like to winch from the back as well. i think im gonna modify my front bumper so it looks like the winch mounts in there. but still keep it so i can swap it over if i needed. im trying to figure out how im gonna do my lead cables right now.

I did the same thing. I have quick disconnect terminals on the battery so I can pop the lugs of the cables on and off and quick disconnects on the winch side. 2/0 goes to the back from the battery and 2 goes from the battery to the winch. Both cables are removable so that they aren't "hot" all the time.

Just install a front and rear receiver hitch, and put the winch on a winch plate. Then you are good to go from front or rear. No need to replace bumpers, that's quite expensive. The hitches also add a degree of frame stiffening, so that is an added bonus. Spend the money saved on some rock sliders, they also add some frame stiffening.

Only need to hook it up when you or someone else is stuck. I keep mine in the jeep (strapped down good) when wheeling and take it out when I'm not. Don't need to worry about someone stealing it either.

Here's mine with a JCR bumper and a winch plate I fab'd up. It's nice having it available for multiple vehicles/locations. I also put a scrap hitch on the front of my trailer so I could us it there. Som Anderson quick disconnects and a 30' extension of 1/0 welding wire. And good to go anywhere.

And it works.
