Maybe, maybe on your 96, but not likely. Need current on board computor tech to send the info to that meter. Not on my 95 and def not on my OBI1 renex 89. Never found anything economical about any jeep, and an eco meter would always read zero if the calibration was truly accurate. So how about a Funometer, now we're talkin jeep. That baby would read maxed out on all occassions!

If you follow the link, there's a list of cars that it's supposed to work with. According to the link, XJ's are not among them.It seems to me there is a similar device that's been around a while that will work. I'm going from memory, but does Scan Gauge sound familiar? It seems to me that it reads DTC's and gives real time data.

If you want a cheap way to monitor engine load/mileage add a vacuum gauge in the cockpit with a simple line teeing into a vac line on the intake manifold. Vacuum high = good MPG, vacuum low = bad MPG.

OBI and Econometer
The link on that Econometer item indicates that compatibility information is not available. It would be interesting to be able to mount that or a similar function meter, but when buying let the buyer beware. If the compatibility is not available, keep shopping. As for OBI 2 or OBI II, that system was mandated requirement to be in place by 96. Such as on my 95ZJ. Still a relatively low intelegence diagnostic system but such has been the development of these systems to what we see in current vehicles. Yours is to determine if we are advancing vs overcomplicating. The 89 has and OBI I or OBI 1 system. Limited electronic control and more of a monitor sytem with almost no ability to communicate to the operator on current or any past functions or misfunctions (no simple codes access). It was intended as an operating system, not a diagnostics system. The OBI II such as on my ZJ is more advanced and diagnostics is primitive but prestent, like the electronics dawn. Still not a flexible system. Such as I can't cheaply add a plug and play recalibrating chip such as on my newer Liberty. I could consider my 69 Camaro as having an OBI 0 system. The only onboard computor is in the music system. The rest is pure untethered power. Someone mentioned the vac gauge. Definately an asset on my 69. Easy and gradual application of the gas pedal leads to the best fuel economy, I get 25 mpg highway at 65mph with 300hp 327. Also one can monitor longer running economy, say highway, by feathering the pedal to get best vac value. On my XJ I don't have a vac gauge but I monitor rpm and balance that with posted speed limits and tolerance of speed with the traffic flow. Bottom line is that item on the ebay could be fun, all gauges do have a benefit, but complatibility is highly suspect. Look for a guage source willing to be more up front with the operating specifications and connectablility.

Poor Mans Eco-meter is called a Vacuum gauge. I have one on my 5.2.
Vacuum is just another word for suction.
The base of suction is suck.
Suck is exactly what your mileage will do.
Mine is at 17.5mpg

peep-OBD 1 didn't come out on the Jeeps til 1991. Therefore Renix is "OBD Nuttin".

Spunkmeyer's got the right info link, therefore the ecometer won't work on the stock XJ.
I still propose that all Funometer applications on any model or year of Jeep will be absolutely compatible although the meter will be predominantly maxed on any given occasion.
Cruiser your right about the 89 era and the OBI terminology. Back in 78 at GM we called the system a Diagnostic Link for the assembly line, we didn't have the end of line dynometers at that time. Later the system upgrade allowed some model applications to view "blinky "codes and over time it developed into an engine control module. We shared system and components ventures with AMC back then.
At that time we didn;t speak in OBI terminology and wasn't a commonly used term until the 90's and became common speak with the release of the OBI II module.
So your right, the 89 could be considered OBI 0.
