What's in This Axle?
Just bought a Ford 8.8 axle, 4:10 gears. Was wondering whether it has a locker, posi, limited slip or??? I don't know what I'm looking at.
Not sure what it's out of either
When spinning where the driveshaft bolts up both drums spin at the same speed in the same direction. Any ideas?
Thanks

If both wheels are spinning in the same direction, you have a limited slip or locker. I'm not sure which one, but you definitely don't have an open diff.

^yup
mini spool. that means both wheels are locked together at all times solid like.
so one wheel will skip or spin when turning but nothing to worry about.
it's the same as welding the spider gears, only better and stronger. and more serviceable.

the ford 8.8s used a heavy weight z or s shaped spring as its way of holding pressure on the spider gears and clutching packs behind the spider gears. id judge that it was an open differential initially just for the simple fact of if its a stock 4.10 gear (which I believe some of them did come with) then it would require the removal of the center section in order for the limited slip unit to be taken apart and rebuilt. I also believe the limited slip unit had a different case design.
EDIT: I looked up some pictures of the cases. based on the design of the case, it was an open.
here is a picture of the open diff case design. exactly the same as the one in your axle

here is a picture of the limited slip case design. completely different.
