I pulled an 8.8 with an lsd from the JY and was going to regear it but theyre in killer shape so I figured I'd find the hp dana 30 with the matching gears but I dont know what years they came in? Anyone have some insight on this for me?

I don't believe any Cherokees came with 3.73 gears from the factory, 6cyl manual got 3.07, automatic got 3.55, 4 cyl manuals got 4.10s, and some 4 cyl automatics got 4.56 gears as far as I know.

Those with factory installed towing packages would have 3.73 gears but it's rare

Well I don't think it matters because someone from 1984 could have gotten it ordered just like someone from 2001 would have done the same

Dana 44's was found from 87-90 Cherokees though

If you can settle for a LP, there are TONS of them under the ZJ's.

Every year from 84-01; they're just very rare. UpCountry packages had them as well.

Maybe in the earlier years but not 97-01's. I ordered my 99 with both Upcountry and factory tow packages and the only gear set option was 3:55 open or 3:55 limited slip in the rear.

I've obly ever seen 3.73:1 in the early years, Renix or newer.

If you can live with LP indeed tons of ZJs and TJs have them. I don't know if YJs ever came with 3.73:1 but they use HP D30.

I swear I've talked to a few people with 00-01 models that have 3.73's, but they may have been axle-swapped or upgraded instead of factory. Probably just 84-91 then.

My 98 2 door supposivly has 3.73s in it, i havent checked it but i was told it has a factory tow package with 3.73s

Check it. Lots of people think "tow package" = "3.73:1". No such option on later years. Look at any Chrysler build sheet for an XJ.

All Diesel XJ's with the VM 2.5L engine have the HP 3.73 gearing.
All of them have also the extended transfer case housing, covering the driveshaft slip yoke.
Both of our Diesels, '99 and 2000 have the 3.73 gearing.

Xj's from 84-99 came with high pinion Dana 30's, 00-01 were low pinion. 3.73's came with the I6 Automatics with the tow package and/or upcountry package. If you find one in a jy with all three skid plates and slightly taller springs (1" hard to tell) it's probably an upcountry with 3.73's. The factory tow package isn't easy to discern from the dealer installed ones. It's always a good idea to check the axle tags/stamps or count gears.
