Yes, you have an AW4 and that is all you can use in your Cherokee.

Really I thought there was another tranny they used on the 01 Cherokee that were different I'm not really liking the aw4 so much tranny has 130,000 miles and is slipping I've only had it the past 5 or 6 months

AW4s usually last a long time if fluid is changed and not otherwise abused. The 1998-2001 XJ AW4s have a 2nd VSS so are not interchangeable with earlier AW4s.

Slipping? What are your symptoms? R OK? Put it into 1-2, does it seem OK? In 3 or D it "slips" when trying to pull out? Be as specific as you can because it might be a simple fix.

Well first there's no overdrive at all I've tried everything can't get it back and even in drive 2 gear slips and in 1,2 it slips I think the guy before me beat the heck out of the jeep he drove it at highway speed in third gear everyday
Oh ya and third feels like it is a little too
And yesterday my jeep didn't won't to shift out of second I had to let of the gas for it to shift into third and it did it real hard

"3" on your trans is 1-2-3 and is recommended for towing to prevent overheating. D is OD .75-1 and is for fuel mileage.

If you put your trans into 1-2 and it seems to slip, there is an internal problem.

Pull the TCU fuse from the power distribution box under the hood and shift manually. Try 1-2 to 3 at 2500-3K and 3 to D at the same and see how it feels and report back.

BTW, with the fuse pulled it will NOT select 1st when in 3 or D. This is just a suggested test to see if you have an electrical or internal issue.

So u bought a Jeep with 130K-had it 5-6 months and u don't like ur tranny anymore. U guys have only been dating a short time. Now its yours and it slips cause the other guy beat it up.No big deal unless u paid 4 a jeep that was suppose to have a good trans.

The AW4 is a good transmission. There are better tannys out there in other cars and trucks and there are are total pieces of crap . many just made to die in 25K. It seems from ur description -the constant slipping in ALL gears that its bad. That is as long as your fluid is at the right level and the filter and pan has been inspected for anything that shouldn't be there. Friction material-metal.

Drop the pan and see whats up -then report back.

It looks alright in the pan but still no over drive and yes I paid for a jeep that ran great and was suppose to have a good tranny

Alright guys and girls y'all want beleive this all it was was the number 10 fuse was missing idk how I missed it I didn't relies what it was until I looked it up know she's running alot better hoping to see a increase in my gas milage lmao
