The problem with most swaps is Diesel engines are almost all heavy as hell. The Cummings 4BT is commonly swapped in but the thing is over 700 lbs. that is big block teritory. The mercedes 240d or 300d look promising but aren't the cheapest choices. Then I found a little 3 cylinder ford cm274 mower/tractor. Hmmm well this raises the question - just how much horsepower do you NEED? I am not trying to set any speed records, I don't need to go over 65 and most of my driving is 35 mph, so would 27 tiny horses hold a jeep at 65? I am sure with a small turbo I could get 30 maybe even 35 horses but if I can get away with just 27 I would be ok with that.
70-80hp diesel I think would be fine. Would not go ANY less. 65 on totally flat ground is luck. You need a cushion for those small hills.

My friend wheels a 4 banger yota on 37 pit bulls. Crazy gearing. He just watches me on the hills. He can not even attempt them.
Then his is geared wrong or he can't drive. I've got two buddies with Yotas, one on 35s and 4.88s and another on 37s and 5.13s (I think) and they pull hills just fine. Both have twin cases and if they are in low low then yes wheel speed is nonexistant buy otherwise it's not an issue.

We run a 87 Suzuki Samurai running a 1.3L 8V carb'd with 36.5 TSL's, stock axle 3.73 gearing, and 6.5:1 t-case gearing to 65mph often on the highway.

Here that same Sami going up a steep uphill washout/trench

Here is a Selec-trac V8 WJ, same washout.

cool sami!!

My friend is geared 5"13. And he knows how to drive if you know what I mean. He has been doing it for years, and got me wheeling.

The hills that I am talking about you can not crawl, it would be impossible. They are high walls. We have a ton of them around here. Lots of fun, wheelie at the top!

Here is someone using a 60HP Kubota in a Ranger and it is capable of running highway speeds.

I think the question is more torque than just HP. Proper gearing and torque can do a lot.

I'm in the south and we don't crawl anything. We coined the term rock bouncer. Google Aetna Mountain Horsepower Hill and ***** and you'll see the kinds of hills we climb. I'm surrounded by parks that have bounty hills all the time. You can get wheel speed with the right gearing and a small motor. That being said when my buggy gets built, hopefully starting this winter, it's getting a LSX small block 454 with somewhere in the 550-600hp range. Diesels are great on the road, tow my heep with a Cummins but suck off road due to turbo lag.

HA!! If you are wheeling with those guys you have to have hp..

Should be sweet when you are finished.

If you don't mind running a 5 speed and making motor mounts. They do make a adapter kit to bolt a vw diesel to a jeep 5 speed http://www.hpamotorsport.com/tdiconversions.htm Only other option i can think of is yank the diesel engine and trans from like toyota pickkup or maybe a 80s s10 or ranger but those diesel are rare now.Or if you want a big job the gm 6.2/6.5 used small block motor mounts.

ok yall we all know what an xj is so I assumed those peramiters where obvious. mine is essentially stock 2 wheel drive with 285/70-15 on the back. If I swapped something that small it would be definitly no wheeling strictly street.
I have assisted on a sami volks swap, incredibly easy. mind you that lil volks on a spool makes more torque than the 4.0 does

Ok I just found a calculator, I had to guess on the frontal area but I over shot the weight (4000) and used .52 as the drag co. this gave me 26.39hp to maintain 60 on level ground w no wind

Ok, so 26 hp can maintain 60 mph with perfect conditions on flat ground. But its not a perfect world. So what about trying to maintain 60 up hills without trying to shove the accelerator through the floorboard? Now add a headwind too. And what about getting up to that 60 mph speed in realistic conditions without taking an hour to do so?
26 hp just won't do it. That little amount of power would have you hating life, and everybody behind you trying to run you off the road to get you out of the way.

A civic with 90hp weights 2000lbs and is slow,Think of how slow a jeep would be with 26hp.
