welding spider gears
Im thinking about welding my spider gears tomorrow. Ive heard of people who feel very strongly about both sides but no one has done it the same way or can tell me what way is better. Any info on this would be great. I don't even mind the "don't do it" as long as you can tell me why

I weld spider to spider and spider to carrier. Nickel rods work best but I used a mig on mine and it's fine. I pull the carrier when I do it so I can see everything. I've heard to cover it in sand after you weld it, while it's still hot, helps with the cast. Not sure why but I know people with buggys that swear by the sand trick. Aluminum foil or a wet rag in the spiders to keep splatter out helps too.

I just welded the spiders together. Didnt bother welding them to the carrier, all that does is take some stress off of the center pin. I have 35" tires and a Dana 44 and have been wheeling it very hard that way for over a year with no issues.
