Weld or Braze temp sensor in tranny pan?
Hello all, I am wondering what the best way to join my 1/8" NPT adapter to a transmission pan is?
I tried brazing a 1/2" bung in before and had trouble with it flowing nicely on the pan...Almost looked like it may be zinc coated? I then took it to a shop and had them change out the 1/2" bung and weld one in and it leaked around the welding. So I am off to the junk yard to look for another tranny pan and am looking for ideas. I'd prefer to mount the sender in the pan and not off one of the lines with a T, however if I can't get the pan to seal correctly I may have to go this route. |

Hold on. There is a temperature port already on the AW4. Toyota used it but Chrysler never did. 1997 and earlier

So I got my sensor hooked up and everything back together. Was wondering if I should be seeing higher temps around 195-200 around town. I did some light offroading and it was getting up to 215. Is this normal for monitoring it off the side of the transmission?

Judging by the temps I would guess 33". Otherwise there is an issue. 215 is hot but not unheard of for the AW4. 175 Degrees: 100,000+ miles 200 Degrees: 90,000 miles 225 Degrees: 55,000 miles (Pressure Drops) 250 Degrees: 25,000 miles (Valves Stick) 275 Degrees: 17,000 miles (Varnish Forms) 300 Degrees: 4,000 miles (Seals & Clutches Burn) 325 Degrees: TRANSMISSION FAILURE |

Cooler type
Is the cooler a 'tube & fin' type or 'plate & fin'?
The tube type is inefficient compared with plate, especially if it lacks airflow. |

Hmm, I run the same cooler. Mounted in front of condenser (with a gap), in front of mechanical fan with a fan clutch from Grand Cherokee V8.
Around town temp stays at 150-160. 85 degree air temp 31" tires, stock 3.55 gears Lifted 4.5" with full size roof rack (additional drag). On highway it runs cooler. Offroad it runs 160 -190 on the beach. If I use 4-Low it drops to 150 degrees. |
Did you mount your temp sensor on the transmission or in line? I'm almost wondering if it reads a little hotter being up on the side of the transmission.

I have a gauge in both loctaions. And shoot the pan with an infra-red temp gun for confirmation. The hot line will run hotter than the port when the torque converter is slipping, which happens in deep soft sand in 4-FullTime.
Are you using a mechanical sender or electrical? And did you confirm your gauge reading with a temp gun? |
