I've been wheeling for about a Decade now, I can tell you first and for most The 2 things you should buy are

1. Front and Rear Recovery points
2. Rocksliders

That way you can wheel it stock and get used to it and dont jump in over your head. If you get stuck you can get pulled out and the sliders will protect your body.

Never wheel alone, Join a local club that is affiliated with Treadlightly, U4WDA, or Blue Ribbon Collation . They usually have classes that can help you now and down the road.

Once you do that you need to decide the route you want to go Weather it is Rockcrawling, or playing on trails, What tire size you want to go with. That way we can further point you in the proper direction

I suggest you drive to PA and goto Rausch creek Offroad Park (Take 1-2 other vehicles with you as a group) and wheel there for a weekend they have a good bit of trails that a stock rig can run all the way to a full blown buggy . But if you goto Rausch you will be required to have Front and rear towpoints, and a fullsize spare

before you do anything, try removing the center console for weight reduction

then check out the page that I get 99% of my factory xj specs from http://jeephorizons.com/tech/xjstockspecs.html

So I don't have to really worry bout lifts and stuff right off the bat. I used to wheel Chevys but that was through farmers fields not trail riding.

Go wheeling first.
Figure out what your jeep can do stock. And what it can't do. Then decide on lift/tires.
Recovery points are the most important and armor is probably second.

What are you talking about?

Just find some easy trails. I'm assuming you've never been wheeling before.

Trails, the alternator is low mounted on the Cherokee so if you play in mud a bunch enjoy replacing them often, also the air intake is pretty low also

It depends on what you plan on wheeling when you "get serious". Certainly doesn't hurt to get a taste of everything. For example, rock sliders are far down on my list of XJ priorities, because where I wheel rocks are not as much of a concern (although I can certainly attest to armour always being a good idea). If you plan on wheeling primarily in mud, then meatier tires might be more of a priority to you.
