using longer lift shocks for more droop/bump stopping

hey cf i saw in another thread about using longer lift shocks to bumpstop with smaller tires and get more axle droop/flex before the shocks limit the droop. i have a 95 xj with cut and fold fenders 4" of lift(3" coils and 1" spacer) and 33's. i was wondering if using longer shocks to bumpstop would significantly shorten the life of the shock, and what size lift shock would be a good match to optimize axle droop

thanks
jay

It will ruin it in in short order.

NEVER use a shock as a bumpstop or limiting strap.

Buy the correct items need to limit the up-travel and droop and install them properly.

Compared to the cost of new shocks and the time lost replacing parts, the cost of bumpstops and limiting straps is insignificant.

Yeah, you dont use the shocks as bumpstops. You use longer shocks not to limit downtravel but that makes for less uptravel as the shock runs out sooner. You need to bumpstop about 1/2in before the shock is fully compressed. The easiest way to do that is to install hockey pucks inside of the coil bucket.

What cracks me up is that people see shocks with "integrated bumpstops" and jump all over them. I hate when products encourage misinformation just so they can make the dollars. Glad to see that your product line does not include those; good job.

Thanks.

Softballs work great for bumpstops also. Just remove the coil and put em in. No drilling, glueing or welding required. And x2 on not using the shocks for bumpstops!! They WILL get destroyed!

yea im sure those provide a real, hard stop.... just use hockey pucks, you cant get cheaper than that.

My bumps literally rotted off over the winter when I was wrenching and I totally forgot about it until today when I was putting in my new chromos. Since I'm going wheeling this weekend, I may have to try that softball trick. I've got right at 4 inches of uptravel in my new 10" 5150's so that sounds about perfect.

softballs are a lot easier to find in florida than pucks less i get em online lol

woah man, you ok? stump your toe or something?... miss your nap? seriously though, whats with all the hating? and just so you know, hockey pucks can be very hard to find in different areas and softballs are not hard to find anywhere. next time don't go all pirate4x4 on someone with a new idea.

and btw. the only hockey pucks around me were $8 a piece! and it would've took 8 or 10. two $3 a piece softballs with no work required. good day to you!

I'd stay with balls. Do the same thing but have a little give. I've seen tennis balls in there too. Wanna try those!

So you just pop a soft ball right in the coil spring? sounds easy to me!

Basically u can put a lot of stuff in there. Wether it is soft and last depends on what it is. Go look at polyurethane coil bump stops on google.
