Upper limit of my stock equipment
Hi guys, I'm new here, just joined about a week ago, been sucked into the build threads since! Anyway, I recently picked up a 95 xj, 4.0, 4x4, auto, with a 4 inch lift and I'm in the process of restoring it. Just curious as to what is the upper limit of tire size for my d30 front and chrysler 8.25 rear. I plan on wheeling but its my dd so nothing serious. I live in far northern maine (can hit canada with a rock) where the Only wheeling we do is mud and snow, and the only rocks we have are a scattered few on the logging trails, and nothing that would reach taller then the hub. My main question is if i were to get into a hole where I'd have to really step on it to spin my way out, whats the largest SAFE tire size to use WITHOUT any driveshaft mods. Just to clarify hard wheeling is definitely going to be the exception, not the rule, but if its my only option I'd like to be sure that my axles will handle my wheels. I've already learned so much from you all and thank a bunch!

31's if you are spinning to get out of a mud hole. The d30 will be fine till whatever tires you have find traction then you might just here a loud bang. I actually get away with 35's on a d30 with 4.88 gears but it is open and I am very aware that it is a weak link.

31s is what i had assumed where the safest from what i've read on here. I just noticed too that i never mentioned my gears, they are 3.55s. Thanks!

I run 31's on 3" with 3.55's. I do plan on getting new axles or regearing to 4.10's to get me back in the stock range though. I don't really plan on going any higher as it just wouldn't really be practical for how I use my XJ.
