Tuffy console install.

I have a 96 Cherokee with no original center console. I have acquired a tuffy center console for this model. Can I install by drilling screws into the tunnel. Behind the brake lever or will I hit something important? There are three holes for this install but the instructions call for bolts up from the bottom. I'm not sure how to get to that area. Not too concerned with security.

Test fit the console and measure off of the e brake mounting holes from the top. Go underneath and re-measure from the same mounting holes to check for interference. Drill. Bolt. Done.

You may have to remove the rear shaft for clearance, and a second set of hands would probably be very useful.

Do you think I could get away with 3 large but short sheet metal screws?

It would probably hold, but it may loosen up over time. I can't see the screws staying tight due to the constant vibration and movement of the console (every time you enter, exit, etc.). Bolts would be the more secure route to go, but it's your Jeep. If it starts to loosen up, you could always just switch to bolts later or just re-tighten the screws.

Thank you 1269. I agree about the bolts. My problem is I am working in the dirt (rocks ants etc) and no help, so I think I'll try the screws. My Cherokee has a mat instead of carpet so I think I'll put some of that sticky type pad down and see if that helps with vibration and the like. I was mainly concerned with drilling into something important.
I appreciate your help.
