Default tubing for stinger

building a custom stinger for my jeep
just need help deciding which.

heres my options

4ft of 2 OD x .250 wall x 1.50 ID 1020 DOM Structural Round Steel Tube = 120 shipped
4ft of 2 OD x .188 wall x 1.624 ID 1020 DOM Structural Round Steel Tube = 90 shipped
4ft of 1-3/4 OD x .250 wall x 1.25 ID 1020 DOM Structural Round Steel Tube= 115 shipped

i think the 1 3/4" OD is pretty much outa the question since 5$ more gets me 2" OD

but is the extra 30$ worth the 1/16"
i dont plan on crashing into rocks often
but i also dont want it to fail and damage my winch in a roll over or somethin.

oh and i do plan on adding plates in the stinger like smittybilts design

what thickness do you guys think i should use there.
its between 1/8" and 3/16" 1/4" seems overkill and heavy.

i will use 1/4" for braces on the backside of the stinger also like smittybilts design.

E.M.T.!!!

Seriously, 2" x .188 will be fine if you brace it out back. That's what mines made from and its not braced.

Do you have a way to bend it?

DOM is unnecessary. Hrew would be plenty strong.

.188

Glad I asked.
I'll look into costs of those.

What's emt stand for
I know hrew is hot rolled electric welded

And what's difference on strength emt vs hrew

I know hrew vs dom is that hrew strength is compromised after first dent where as dents in dom don't affect strength, at least no where near as much.

And finally what's difference on bending capabilities between hrew and emt?

No I don't have a way of bending it myself.
But I'm hoping to find someone locally that does.

DOM is over kill for sure. DOM is only needed for roll cages and safety equiptment. For the bumper I would say 2" .120 would be just fine. I really wouldn't ship the steel unless you don't have a wholesale steel place near you. Do you have a way to bend it? A cheap bender will kink the tube so make sure you got a good bender.

EMT is crap , its electro metalic tube , used and conductor raceway for electrical runs. I use EMT all the time being that I'm a electrician. It isn't structural at all , the material is like pot metal crap...

I was only having it shipped for dom tubing.
I can get hrew up to 0.188 thickness.
Which is probly what I'll go for.

Just curious if I should search for emt tubing.

And ya I need to figure out the bending situation..

Well that settles it then.
Hrew 0.188 tubing

Now I just need to find someone or somewhere locally that does tube bending.
Maybe 4wheel parts has one... I'm pretty sure I've seen them making cages.

structural design > material.. granted I wouldn't build a roll cage out of conduit lol. but DOM is over kill for a lot of things. I won't start this argument though. HREW is plenty good for a stinger.

Well if you look up specs for roll cages DOM is mandatory. But like you said... no reason to argue...

I won't argue, but I'll just state something. as I do agree, its mandatory if you use that vehicle in events. most people building cages on xj's don't do competitions, and if they do, they use DOM, no questions. true?
