Post Transmission swap questions

Want to swap my transmission and transfer case from my 1990 xj to my 1986 xj. The 90 has a 4.0 l6 and the 86 has the 2.8l v6. Can it work?

Welcome to the forum.

No, totally different bellhousings. Your 2.8 V6 is a Chevrolet 60 degree motor. If you want an OD transmission, find an early S10 Blazer or S10 with the 2.8 and grab its 700R4 trans and transfer case. You should have the A904 transmission in yours now. While lacking an OD, you have a more upgrade options than us as far as Shift kits, Valve bodies, Torque converters, Ratchet shifters, etc... to make it perform better.

From what I read, u can't fit a 4.0 in a pre 87 xj. The engine bay is smaller. To make it fit, u might need to trim down some stuff

Wanna bet. Lol. It's only like 2 1/4 inches shorter but will fit. I put a stroked 258 (4.2L) in my 85.

Thanks. I'll do that then. The 86 is a 2x4 that I want to build into a 4x4. Just as a project with my son. I only owned the 4.0l. I'm thinking putting some Dana 44s under her. Maybe from a new wrangler. And I want to eliminate any electrical and vacuum being its a off road only jeep. Would I need a CPU if it's a newer transmission?
