Transmission Question
I have a 2000 Cherokee Classic. It is lifted 3" and has 31" tires on it. What gears would be best to put in it to acomadate these tires? I do normal everyday driving and often drive down country roads, and when I go offroading I typically drive slow I don't like stomping on the gas. Hopefully that gives you a clue about the type of driving I do.
The only reason I ask is because the way I understand it with stock gears I'm putting alot of stress on my transmission with those larger tires, even on the highway I never go above 60 and its 65-70 max on the interstate.

I'm guessing you have an auto so 4.10s would take you back to stock but there isn't much difference between these and stock and would cost you anywhere from a grand to 1500 to regear your axles. The difference in the stock size and 31s shouldn't hurt your tranny. It's when you get up to 35s and larger that it starts having to shift more to pull the bigger tires.

As mentioned 4.10:1 will get you back to stock ratio. Regearing is expensive unless you throw complete axles underneath, you can find XJ axles with 4.10:1 already in them. If you're going to be on 31" tires forever this makes sense, I'd even suggest looking at a Dana 35.
In lieu of that I'd install a transmission cooler. Your transmission is working a lot harder since the final drive ratio is no longer ideal, heat and old fluid are what kill AW4s. Keep it out of overdrive in hilly areas for the same reason, and your transmission will probably outlast the rest of the Jeep.

I'll get a cooler, other than that I'll probably just take it easy on it. Now what I need to do is jack the rear up and find out if it's limited slip or not
