Default Help! Sway bar stuff.

I just bought my first XJ. It’s a 99 with an 8’ lift and 33’s has 1 ton steering and 1 ton track bar. At highway speed I have to correct the wheel way too much. So it doesn’t have a rear or front sway bar and I just wanted some suggestions on what brand to buy and what not. Please help!

the only thing that will help something that high and custom would be Currie Antirock part number CE-9900XJF they run about $600 but I hear good things about them , Also make sure everything is tight in the front end I also run 'the cure' made by ruffstuff specialties on my one ton high steer setup it helped a lot with my steering corrections at highway speeds

8" of lift and 33's...yeesh.

I'd advise loosing a few inches of lift if nothing else.

When you say correcting the wheel, try to be a little more detailed, e.g.:

Does it need correcting after bumps?
Does it just generally wander when driving?
Do you feel there is a large dead spot in the wheel?

it’s wandering a lot on the road from line to line and I have to turn the wheel to keep inside the lines.
As far as dead spots I feel like dead straight to like 2 inches to the left is kinda dead.
I was wanting to explore how to lower it to maybe 4-6 inches. How would I go about doing that?

Your steering parts could be lose or worn, the steering box could be worn out, or it may just need a proper alignment. Swaybars are to control body roll when going around corners, they don't affect steering.

Smart. Its nice to see someone get it, sometimes less is more. With 33's there's certainly no cause to be sitting on 8" of lift, thats bonkers.

Dropping down to a 4" lift would give you an ideal combo. But to do that, start with the assumption that everything related to the current lift will not be useable. Without knowing exactly what's under there, thats the best i can offer.

If the 8" lift was done properly(lol, and that's always a big if), very little will be compatible with a 4" setup. The simplest and most cost effective approach is to start from scratch with a complete 4" kit, arms, trackbar, the whole 9 yards.

PS - I'm sure im not the only one who'd love to see a pic of this thing.

at 8" of lift , if done right..... he should only really need springs everything else should be adjustable ,if......it was done RIGHT . it should already have a sye , adj track bar ,adj upper control arms , long arms .yeah maybe the brake lines may be a little long , not real sure on the driveshafts either . pics would help a lot , maybe its only lifted 4" and has 33" tires that would kinda make it 8" higher than bone stock if you measure in the right spot lol we need pics!!

sounds like your steering is not up to part. wore out joints and your track bar angle may be off from the draglink. Dead spots are almost a sure sign of worn out TRE's

If you're seeing wandering, it is likely there are some worn parts that need looking at.

This is where an additional hand really help. With the vehicle on, and it sitting on pavement, have someone turn the steering wheel side to side and look for movement where there shouldn't be.

At times, faster side to side and slower side to size can be better, depending on what you're looking at.

Start with the steering and steering box itself. Treat everything as it's own system, and work you're way down. When you tun the steering wheel in that deadspot, is the pitman arm turning? If not, check the steering linkage for incorrect movement (had it on a '91 of mine). If the linkage is fine, and the pitman arm isn't moving, you're steering box might be needing a change out. Note though, if that you're trackbar is moving some, it can make the pitman arm seem to not move, since the body itself will act as slop.

Check all your steering rod ends, make sure they're not loose, and they don't easily roll.

Posting up some pictures of your setup will do far far more to help us help you.

That's a nice looking XJ. Careful though, Gruden might trade it out from under you.

Do you have any pics of the axle end of the steering? I would like to see if that is what is causing your problem
