transfer case compatibility?
 

so i have my new jeep, a 99 with an ax15 and np 231, tcase leaks like nobodies business out the tail shaft.

i also have my old trail jeep. a 99 w aw4 and recently rebuilt tcase thats never let a drop out.

i wanna swap em so i can rebuild the one and put a sye in it so i can ditch the tcase drop.

will i have any issues or is it a direct swap. ive beens searching and there seems to be some input shaft differences between the pre 97s and later ones. but i haven't been able to find any info about about straight 99 to 99 swap w diff transmissions.

anybody know? :help:

They will be the same spline count. There is a SLIGHT chance the input shaft length might be a little different be cause of the different transmissions.

yea thats what im worried about.. cant have the car off the road for more than a day during the weekend. have to goto work on monday early.

but if i take the one off i cant just put it back on without rebuilding it. its too leaky, and would drive me crazy.

well ill just give it a try and see what happens.

Do you aready have the rebuild parts and SYE? It doesnt take more then an house or so to rebuild the 231. and lets say and hour to pull and hour to install. Thats over estimating too if you have done it before. What all do you plan on changing? O rings and seals, chain, and shift fork pads?

You are also going to have to swap the driveshafts as well.

True, I was assuming that if he already had everything for the SYE that he woulda already sourced a new cv rear shaft. Still. Not anything you couldnt do in 4 hours. Why tear the jeep apart twice?

Oh, I was not saying that to try to create problems with anyone. I was saying that to just make sure they were prepared for everything. On any type of forum one can ever be sure of the mechanical ability or mechanical knowledge of any member. I totally agree with you. No need to tear it apart twice. : )

Take them both off and measure the input shaft length on both. If the same than just bolt them back up, if different tear the two apart and switch the input shafts

Well I've never rebuilt a tcase myself. Had help from a very skilled family member last time. To be honest. I watched him do most of it. I wanted to give myself enough leeway if I screwed up I wouldn't be off the road long. That's why I'd planned to put my other one in just in case. I did the pull and replace myself last time. So I can get it taken out pretty quickly fingers crossed no bolts are seized like again


I do not have the parts yet for the sye nor the new shaft. But they are on the way
