Default Trans temp gauge sensor location question

Many different opinions to the installation location of a temp sensor for the transmission.

Option 1...spliced in the outflow line from the transmission.

Option 2...spliced in the return line from radiator/aux cooler.

Could sure use some advise and the reasoning for your suggestion.

I put mine after the aux cooler. So I can monitor the temp of the fluid going back into the pan. I can watch it change as I'm driving and when the torque converter locks up. As soon as the converter locks the temp starts coming down. At some point I'm going to get a second gauge for the outgoing line from the trans. I use mechanical gauges.

If not using the temperature port in the AW4, than I prefer the sender in the out/hot line. ATF will lose some of its properties after reaching certain temperatures.
The pan is easy to get a reading with an infra-red temp gun for comparison.

Thanks everyone!

I glad I posted here as in all my research nowhere did it suggest using the temp sensor port on the transmission. I do believe that is the option I will go with instead of cutting lines! Thanks CCKen!

Good luck.

You're lucky, starting in '98 that port was eliminated (not drilled and tapped).

CCKen,

I have a 98 AW4, where do you recommend installing temperature sending unit?

Thanks

I have a '98 as well and am also planning to do this. My recommendation is to put it in the line that comes from the trans to the cooler. This most accurately measures the temp of the fluid inside the trans, which is what really matters. Putting it after the cooler doesn't really tell you much.

By the way, what happened to that little handy dropdown thing that told us about each person's XJ (year, engine, trans, etc.)? I asked in another thread but didn't get much of an answer.

<====== Used to be here.

There are several threads on several Jeep Cherokee forums that cover this. Most tap in to the supply line to the cooler using a tee set up. Some are kind of iffy.

You might try a Google search and include "Jeep Cherokee Forum" as part of the search term.

Just make sure it's in the Supply line.

For purposes of tapping into the supply line are the metal lines 3/8?

yes. and make sure you use the proper flaring tool when you mount in the fitting for the temp sensor.

I was thinking of using a Swagelock "T". What did you use?

I used 2 of these, and the various fittings I needed for the hard lines and rubber lines. I used mechanical gauges so I needed a bigger fitting for the temperature probe. I will take picture tonight and post it tomorrow.
