Default Trac-Lock vs Aftermarket Locker

I like the idea of an OEM lsd 'posi'... what are the pros vs cons to them vs an aftermarket locker? Mine is a DD so I like to keep things streetable. What say you??

Rear or front? What kind of terrain? This thread is about to go off buddy, make sure you state specifics.

Trac-lock is OEM disc type limited slip, NOT a locker.

On the street trac-lock is a better choice. OFF the pavement trac;lock is only marginally better than OPEN diffs.

Thanks. I figured a lsd would do pretty decent off road... I guess that isn't the case?

I do see alot of snow/slush and crap here too... I think an lsd would do better than a locker in that situation though.

IMO Trac Lock is great if you are going to try and battle "Black Diamond" trails. I have seen lots jeeps running Trac locks do some awesome stuff. But if you are going to get more crazy on the trails, then i would say an aftermarket locker. I love my factory lsd...it makes the trails more fun than just lock and go.

if you plan on trying anything more than a level rock garden, avoid any sort of LSD
as soon as you put off camber and rocks together you might as well be running an open diff
but for anything other than rock crawling, LSD does it's job

Offroad, a limited slip will be as useless as an open diff. I never put limited slips in my 4x4s for that reason. I daily drive mine with a welded rear axle and a Lock-Rite up front on 35's. It's fine on the street, even in ice and snow I've been in with it.
I personally wouldn't put a limited slip in unless it stays on pavement all the time.

My GC ( 2004 Overland) has "Vari-Lok Progressive" in the D30//186MM and the D44/226MM. I have no idea if it is the same as discussed but in the last 3 years it has worked flawlessly on and limited off road.

Can anyone tell me if it is the same or was improved or changed? Regardless I can tell you my Detroit Lockers do work better.

Thanks

Seems like opinions vary here.... the reason I'm looking into it is because my exhaust guy, who's built some very nice rides, had an XJ on 35's, long arm, etc and told me he could go anywhere with his lsd and open front. BS? maybe so...

Maybe everywhere he wanted to go was paved. I don't see that at the case in anything other than slick asphalt.

ha! open front?? I call total bologna on going anywhere. you'd do very well with a LSD rear and eventually put in a front lunchbox locker when you feel the need. but an LSD will always let you down when you're lifting tires, trying really steep climbs, or when you're hung up. but if you're not getting into any really intense situations I wouldn't worry about it. if you're going through a ditch and over some rocks and through the trail, an LSD is good. but if you're making your own ditch, dragging your jeep through some rocks, and hoping you get through the trail. locked/locked

Locked/locked ftw. Daily driving with a locker in the rear isn't bad at all. Just takes a little getting used to.

I say BS.... There is no way a OEM LSD is going to act like anything other than a OPEN diff, when combined with 35" tires.... Aftermarket LSD maybe.

That said a Competent driver can make a open diff work in places ALL the experts will say only a locked axle will work.
