Hi all.
I'm almost at the buy a different car point.
Which saddens me. I've done a lot the my xj.
But I have recently started towing a small self built camper.
Weighs about 8or900 loaded. (560 licensed)
I'm struggling with upper end power. Especial inclines. Even medium ones. Often going down to 2nd to maintain speed.
I have rebuilt the motor. 20thou over, reseated valves etc. (same issue on the old motor)
New sports exhaust. (2.5")
Fuel pressures good. Regulators ok.
Injectors cleaned.
There is a new transmission in it now.
31's and regeared diffs to 4.11
I fail to see why a 4.0 petrol would struggle so much with such a small load.
As Evan said, trailer design makes a huge difference. I used to tow my Bug which was probably a 3500-4000lb load total and my XJ did it no problem. I would borrow my brothers trailer that maybe weighed 1000lbs and it was a nightmare, completely empty. His trailer had a huge folding gate that acted as a parachute.
