Towing with a lifted XJ
 

Anyone towing with a lifted XJ? I don't even have my XJ yet, but intend to lift it 3-4 inches with a full spring pack. I won't be towing anything stupid heavy. I have a boat that weighs 2000 max with all the vacation gear loaded. I will pull it long distance at interstate speeds. Other than that just a utility trailer short distances. Is a 4" lift too much for these purposes?

It'll be fine. Mine's at 3.5" and I pull 2 jet skis all the time. Just invest in a tranny cooler to keep temps down. They're always a good idea whether you're doing light or heavy towing.

My 2000 has a 4.5" lift, 32's and 3.55 still... blah. but towing is no problem. ive towed a heavy trailer with a quad, a toyota tacoma (2001) dingy towed it. never had a problem.

x2 on the cooler. i got one and piggy backed the factory cooler.

x2 on everything these guys^^^said, ive towed two trailers, ive towed motorcycles, atvs, jetskis, a trailer full of gravel that had to been at least 1000 pounds on top of the trailer, a trailer full of furniture, like mattresses and such, so youll be ok, get a tranny cooler and your good to go

I've pulled a 6x10 cargo from TX to Minn to Ind on up into Pa mountains & then down here to Mo.crammed FULL, including jeep & roof. 6.5" lift, 33s. Interstate speed limit was fine. Anything faster was a whiteknuckle ride.

the only thing i would be worried about is a tranny cooler.. and depending on tire size and load weight i'd be worried about brakes. the stock XJ brakes SUCK... theres no way around it.

i would look into the WJ brake swap - dual piston calipers and rotors that dwarf the stock XJ setup

Most XJs with the tow package received a stock tranny cooler.
Yeah I agree about the brakes, I've towed with my stock laredo and I had trouble stopping while towing a trailer with a couple dirtbikes on it and that's with a set of STOCK 235s. My friend just sold his truck and he wants to start paying me money to help him haul scrap with my XJ (we're not taking huge loads of course) and I'm going to be doing some brake upgrading before that happens. I need to replace my rotors as they cannot be turned anymore. I am converting the rear drums to a disc setup and I'll be running larger size cross drilled and slotted rotors all around, and all new calipers.

I'm tired of only having one front wheel lock up on me when I make abrupt stops. It also pulls to the right when I stop at traffic lights, so I know its definitely time to start replacing stuff.
