The easiest would be finding a newer xj rear axle so its an 8.25 that had a 4.0 manual and bolting that in with the discs brakes from a zj or kj

Do you know what years are bolt on compatible? And as far as explorers go what years can I pull from there?

Locked diffs on a DD? Just Front and DD, or just rear? Can both be done and still be DD?

Yes you can have lockers in a DD.

as far as lunchbox yep. for a nicer option I would go with a detroit for auto locking, or an Eaton E-locker for selectable. My 2 favorites, but In my xj I have a spartan in the back, and lock-right up front.

Im running a Detroit in the rear of mine i personally don't like it i catch it not looking in bad situations

Not talking bad on Detroit cause there a good locker i just have better luck with the lunch box lockers there cheap and can be replaced on the trail never had to but it could be done i can save money on them and not have to run the additive
