Default Tip for removing lower sway bay stud when installing disconnects

I installed my RE sway bar disconnects this weekend and found an easy way to remove the pressed in pins for the lower sway bar mounts. These are the pins (or maybe they should be called bolts) that are pressed in to the lower bracket on the axle.

After a quick attempt with a torch and a hammer we were worried about bending the bracket. We had my tie-rod puller sitting there from pulling my tie-rod earlier and my 14 year old said, "why don't you use that puller on the bolt?". Turns out it worked perfect. It was $11.99 at Harbor Freight.
I guess all that working on RC cars that my son does is paying off.

Sorry, title should say "sway bar" but the forum does not appear to let me edit post titles.

I thought this was how everybody did it? lol you are lucky you didn't bend the mount with all the hammering.

I guess it may be obvious to others who have done a lot of work on Jeeps before but I did ask around for advice before I started and the suggestions I got were:

1. torch and hammer
2. a press
3. a deep socket and a vise

and these suggestions were from Jeep guys.

So maybe my photos can help out another newbie like me. Or at least convince them that it is worth the trip to the auto parts store for a cheap puller.

You just helped me out! I was wondering the same thing. Installing RE 3.5 Superflex.
Thanks for the tip.

Pretty sure I went about it the hardest way possible. I started with hammering. That didn't go well. Next was a c-clamp and a large socket on the backside. It didn't go well. So I switched to cutting the bolt off so I could get a better hit with a punch. The didn't work either. Finally drilling out the old stud/bolt. That worked just took forever.

Wish I had seen this thread a month ago.

I did the same thing on mine, but the jaws had barely enough surface area to grip, so I had to put a c clamp on the jaws of the press to hold it onto the bracket lol.

I started the same thing yesterday. I heated with a torch and started hammering with no luck.

I started to bend my bracket ever so slightly so i stopped. I am going to try your method tomorrow.

Thank you for the idea!
