Default Three link front suspension??

I'm on my fourth xj now and on my first three the down pipe just below the header have been dented in by the upper control arm on the driver's side. I was talking to another xj owner about this and he suggested I try a "three link front suspension setup" which simply entails removing the upper control arm on the driver's side and only using the remaining three control arms. I was skeptical, but the guy swears it is plenty strong enough, improves the ride, and eliminates the possibility of denting in my exhaust pipe. I'm not so sure I want to try it but figured I'd post it up here and see what ya'll thought.

Thanks

A 3 link is a very common suspension set up.

The 'crush' in the downpipe is there from the factory. Some say it is to clearance the driveshaft, other say it has to do with emissions. You can order one without it from Walker Exhaust.

There's a lot more to it than simply removing a control arm. Also, the 3 link I just got, mounts the third member on the driver side. Whoever you were talking to needs a Rectal Entry Cranial Extraction. LOL....the dent in the pipe is indeed from the factory.

The dent is there for emissions purposes. It's there to restrict the exhaust flow and keep the heat in for the catalytic converter. It not there because the upper control arm hit it, the flimsy stock arm couldn't dent melted cheese.

Mine had scratched all over it from it hitting my upper arm. its less of the upper arm, more of the axle side mount that hits it

Nothing beats the advice from people that cant tell a women from a nam dressed as a women, hence OP friend. Dude seriously, if you've dented every exhaust pipe on all your XJs, best to notify Chrysler, not us bwahahahah. But yea, its meant to be there. Rumor also has it, its dented for the reason of the HP 30 but i can neither confirm nor deny these allegations towards it.

no. just no. dont remove the drivers control arm and toss it. the dude that told you that is a tard.

most 3 link kits come with the 3rd link on the drivers side.
they are also built to be 3 links. you will fold up the axle and destroy a lot of stuff if you just toss an arm away. since i share the road with you according to your user name i ask you not to try..... because i dont want a chance of you running into me when stuff fails.

Did you know there is an entire other frame rail to mount an upper on?

HDO makes nice 3 link brackets.

Not sure if you can see it in there or not.

Thanks for the free education ya'll. This is why I post these things up here. Don't worry oddgreen, I have no intention of removing my upper arm. The idea sounded sketchy to me from the start. I figured it couldn't hurt to ask though..what if I was missing out on some amazing cheap trick just cuz it sounded weird?? As the saying goes, "If it sounds too good to be true it usually is" I guess my jeep that didn't have the dent must have been aftermarket.. I should've posted this sooner I would've pulled that pipe before I parted it out..
