SYE tranfercase
So I was browsing craigslist and came across an NP231 out of a wrangler that already has a SYE eliminator in it. I can get the case for about 150 bucks and it is in good shape. Only question I have is with spline count. It is a 21 spline case and im not sure what is in mine. Any way to know without pulling the case? My jeep is an 89 model, 4.0 w/ an automatic trans. please help. If it fits i dont want to miss a good deal.

According to this:

... you have a 21-Spline "short" input.

That is correct you need to switch out the input gears. I have also heard that the bolt pattern between the wranglers and Cherokees maybe different, so double check on that first. There are lots of TCs out there, just gotta keep an eye out and be willing to swap out input gears. The input gear swap is pretty cake, especially since you should open up the Tc anyways to make sure it's all good before installation.

The bolt patters are the same. The Wrangles are clocked 10-degrees "higher", but that pattern is on the transmission side (a.k.a. there are no clocking or bolt pattern differences between wrangler & cherokee x-fer cases).
The statement that you need to change the input gear of the x-fer case is based on an assumption (you have not provided enough information to make that determination). It is, however, a possibility. Your spline count is correct, but there is still a depth question.
