I have a 88 cherokee with a 4.0/aw4. I just put a trans/transfer-case in it out of a 96 since mine was completely shot. I know the 96 and 88 are a different spline count. My question is the 88 had a sye and the 96 did not. Can I remove the sye from the 88 and install it in the 96 ! I have already put the 96 in and currently have the factory shaft in it. I have googled and haven't came up with anything useful!!

My understanding is they both have the same spline count for the np231, so you should be able to pull it and put it in the newer np231 without a problem.

That's a link for you and everyone else that needs info/spec's on t-case interchange ability.
Take a look at the chart. It clearly shows the input shaft length and spline counts. Your 88 has a short 21 spline, the 96 has a long 23 spline.

Well then, you learn something new every day. Sounds like you should take what you have that works and sell it and then buy a new SYE

I don't think he needs to swap the input shafts, that I believe(can be wrong) is only necessary if you try and use a 92'+ transfer case with a 91'- transmission and vice versa, then the input needs to be swapped to work but if its the output shaft(sye) he should be able to swap it right over. The speedo gear though I'm not so sure about, might need splicing.

I think we should listen to Serious on this one, the math to this equation shows that just the sye itself won't work in the swap over but if you change over the input gears then it should work fine. Right Serious?

Meaning if my research is correct, which I think it is. He doesn't new to do anything but swap his sye to the new transfer case.

Here's where I'm confused with your guys post, he's clearly stating he's using the 96' transmission AND transfer case. Meaning no input shaft is needed to be changed. The only time the input needs to be changed as your link shows is when you are swapping a 88 TRANSFER CASE to a 96' TRANSMISSION. Then the 96' 23 spline input would need to be switched to a 21 spline to work but he's not asking that but asking if the SYE which is the output shaft NOT the input shaft would swap over, now looking at all the syes out there, there is NO mention of them saying they only work with certain years, they work with all years as its the OUTPUT shaft that's swapped . Meaning if my research is correct, which I think it is. He doesn't new to do anything but swap his sye to the new transfer case.
All I want to do is switch the sye. Not the trans case
