Tom Woods offers a short shaft kit, it's around $400 with a $400 core

I've gor RE H&T's on my site.

you are going to have to do a hack n tap for the 242 unless you are made of money and can play the large amount for the SYE kit. i run the hack n tap on my 242 currently and it works great with no issues at all. i also beat the hell out of my jeep. just in a year i have rebuilt tcase 3 times. its on its 2nd front axle and 2nd rear axle. and a million driveshafts.

i believe they are both just as strong but the differnce between them is the 231 has more of a market and the 242 has full time 4wd so you can use it in all weather conditions.

also i think that if you are an area that experiences all 4 seasons the 242 is better

I went with the Tom Woods kit. The new tail shaft can be installed without pulling the entire t-case, but the rear half has to come off though. I'm sure it would be easier by pulling the whole case.

Then again, I rarely take the easy way out of things...
