SYE kit installed, DS too short! Options?

I was finally able to save some cash and just installed an SYE kit. All went well with the install, I acquired a front drive shaft from an XJ that I was gonna throw in the rear.

I was going to hook up the rear DS and fell short by a couple inches. I measured from yoke to yoke and got 35 inches. The front XJ DS I was gonna throw in the rear measured 33.5 and is longer than my stock one up front when fully extended. Then I researched that having it fully extended isn't good either.
This blows after waiting so long to do this.
I've heard a ZJ front drive shaft might do the trick?
Any expert advice is greatly appreciated, wanna do this asap without having to buy a $200+ drive shaft.

I think that only works with the auto transmission. It's longer than the manual and the 231 TC is also shorter than the 242. My front shaft was fine at 3 1/2". I know there is a post somewhere with all the lengths of the DS that will fit but I couldn't find it.

This might help

Thanks, yeah having a manual transmission is shorter. Gonna keep on searching for the right length needed. I hope fnjeep might have something, if not maybe I can get this one lengthened if possible

These lengths are collapsed lengths.

Hey, I'm in the same boat. 5 speed with 231 TC. Getting ready to do SYE with 3 1/2" lift. Couple of questions; where did you get the kit that cheap and was that with free shipping? Did you remove the TC? Post what you work out please.

just have it retubed & balanced, no need to buy a whole new shaft.

I had called 4wheelparts for a price check, guy on the phone told me they had an open box item return $200. So i rushed over, I had cash on hand and offered $180.

I left the TC in, after taking it apart I realized it wasn't a bad deal. I just had a small head rest while laying down and halogen light to see. You really don't need to pull the whole thing out, its easy. I just watched an SYE install from bleepin jeep.

I first put into 4 low before getting started, later on you'll see a small pin pop out next to the speedometer on the TC.
Be sure to pull the front drive shaft off first! You'll need an impact wrench and a 1 1/8 socket to remove the front yoke, as well as installing the new yoke to 125 ft lbs of torque. I scored an electric impact on Craigslist $30.

I used a 30 mm wrench to pull my fill/drain plugs. Make sure to have a good set of snap ring pliers to pull and install the rings on the output shaft. Pliers that open out when you squeeze the handles together. That pin by the speedometer, make sure it doesn't exceed 1". I think mine was 1 1/16" no problem. If anything take a disc grinder to it and make the cut.
You'll see how this fits when putting on the new adapter.
Taking it apart was all the work, I used blue thread locker when bolting it back up. Red rtb to seal it up and a little rtb on both yokes with grease on outside of yokes.

There is a handful of 4x4 shops around here, I'll see what I'm quoted to get this retubed to desired length

There is a handful of 4x4 shops here, I'll see what it costs to retube to desired length vs a new DS

4wheelparts quoted me $269 saying they hand it off to drive line services here locally.
Tanner 4x4 quoted me $95 to send to the same place

I have the manual transmission and did this a couple years ago. You need the front driveshaft out of a V8 Grand Cherokee. I believe 1993-1996...

spartan762 03-15-2017 10:51 AM

In the link previously posted it measures 33.5 collapsed. Do you remember what yours measured?
