SYE installed...need drive shaft help
It seems like hours of researching is getting me no where. All I'm trying to do is figure out what drive shaft I need. I wanted to use a stock front shaft, but it looks like it may be too short. I'm running only 3 inches of lift and that is where she is staying for a while. All over the internet I've seen people are using stock front shafts, but now I may not be able to? I saw somewhere that you can only use one with a C8.25 rear, I have a Dana35. Length aside...where does bearing cap and u-joint size come into play with all of this?? All that being said, I'm coming up with a drive shaft length needed at ride height is 33.5 inches, meaning about 32 inches collapsed. Where do I go from here????????????

A front drive shaft will be long enough and should work just fine with your D35. I have a Tom Woods shaft in mine but carry a front shaft as a spare.

Are you sure? I measured my front shaft length and at ride height is measured in at 31.5" I didnt think it would be long enough.

You do realize it has a slip joint in it, right?
If you aren't sure take the front shaft off and put it on the back to see if it works before you buy another one.
I can run a stock front shaft on a Jeep with 5.5" of lift.
If you can't decide at all call this number:

Here you go.
Here is a chart that lists all the drive shaft length for the xjs and zjs. You WILL need a longer one! I went with one of the longest ones available...33"... And I still only have about 2" of slip left in the driveshaft. I found one on eBay for $30 and repainted it and put new u joints in it. For a grand total of $250 for a full SYE and DriveShaft! And it has given me nothing but smiles!!!!

At the end of the day, you cannot anticipate what length you will need because there are so many variables to the car and lift.
After lifting and after installing the SYE, you need to lower the vehicle and then measure the distance from the flange on the TC (in the case of a Rubicon HnT SYE on a 242) to the center on of the u-connector (the pin) on the rear differential.
I assume the procedure for a 231 SYE would be similar, with a different measure point on the TC..
My mechanic told me that if the measurement was 34" (for my car), I should go with a 33.5" to take some sagging into account, as a new lift will invariably settle a bit lower after a while.

5 inches of lift. 31 and some change inch front drive shaft on a 99 8.25. I do think your math is a little off. Are you measuring before you cut the TC shaft for HnT or before the SYE is installed on the TC. Either way they both need to be measured after install on level ground. I wouldn't go crazy go get yourself one from the JY and put it on after the install. Post up pics and let us see how it looks.

Well I have a 3" lift on mine with the 8.25 and I'm using a stock driveshaft from a 94 ZJ. It should be the same length as the XJ front shaft and it's too long. I think it should work ok with the D35.
