SYE + front shaft on stock XJ?
Anyone know if this would work? I'm thinking I might like to get my 231 swap done and over with before I do the lift or anything else. Just curious. I feel like the front shaft might not be long enough.

I'm running a 4.0 auto trans Xj with 4.5 lift with a 231 and 8.25. I have a hack and tap sye and front drive shaft out of an Xj ( probably an auto trans). The problem I have run into is mine is too long. At ride height the driveshaft is nearly completely collapsed. (Error of previous owner) From the output shaft yoke to the yoke at the pinion it measures 30.5 inches with roughly 4.5 inches of lift. Depending on what trans, engine, and tc of the Xj the front drive shaft comes out of will affect the length of the shaft. Your best bet would be to install the sye, measure from yoke to yoke and go find a Xj front DS from your local junk yard with a tape measure. For example mine measures 30.5, a 89-01 4.0 Xj with manual trans front DS length is 29.25, so I leave myself with 1.25" of the slip yoke for up travel.
Here's a screen shot chart of Xj and zj front DS lengths:
Hope this helps

I was kind of in this same boat until the post office screwed me over and lost all but the hardware for the hack-n-tap. It wouldn't have worked, the driveshaft would have been too long anyway. Now I'm using a single cardan style shaft with a dent in it. Yay pick n pull...

Sounds good. I'll be sitting around 5.5" when my lift is done. Since I'll be changing the whole driveline geometry at that point, it makes the most sense to hold off on the T-case swap. I mean, I COULD swap the 231 in a while, but I'd rather get the SYE installed in it while it's out.

I would swap it in when you do the lift. At 5.5 with not tc drop or sye, you are going to have a lot of vibrations and terrible angle. The sye takes about an hour, maybe 2 at max to install with the tcase on the bench. It really is easy, just have it ready to rock and slap the tcase in! Do it once, do it right!
