Default switching locker....

So a buddy of mine has an XJ with a locker in the front. He says i can have it if i can switch it back to open diff. What i need to know is, should i switch the whole axle, or should i just switch the pull the locker part out and try to set the backlash back up when its all done? I gotta do this tomorrow morning so any help would be cool. thanks

If the gearing is the same as yours I would swap axles. just unbolt and rebolt up. no setting lash/fluids ect... but to each there own. i would rather unbolt an axle from a vehicle then dissasemble two axle. but thats just me.

If the gearing is different. Then plan on reagearing the rear. or ask if you can swap that too....?

If it is a spool or a full case locker or limited slip or anything of the like then you will need to re-gear/re-setup the gears with a new carrier and spider gears. If it is a lunchbox locker then just drop that thing out put some spider gears in, fill it with fluid and your done.

This. If you are keeping the same carriers in the housings you won't have to set anything up. The backlash won't change. No need to take the carrier bearings off. Just pull the ring gear, if necessary to get the locker out, and put it back on after you install the spider/side gears.

If you swap axles you should both get alignments when done.
