I need new suspension in the rear( i tried to put to much flex into them and there done for), and i have been looking for new leaf springs for my xj when i just came across some people that have done a conversion to coil springs in the rear. im wondering if anyone has done this and what its benefits are.

 

almost every one on pirate has done it, benefits are more flex and able to put bigger axles under it which means bigger tires

 

how big of a job is this to do ive seen people saying it takes anywere from a weekend to better have a pro do it.

 

You need to cut off your spring perches on the axle weld coil buckets on to the axle and need to be a good welder because cast iron is what the tubes are and you need to know how to properly weld to it or your welds will crack you need to get or make control arms or known as links youll need a truss on the axle you need coil buckets on the unibody you need coils and a cross member to mount the links to on the frame side youll also need link tabs to weld to the axle read pages 2 3 and 4 http://www.greatlakes4x4.com/showthr...=200238&page=4

 

Its not a bolt on conversion, if thats what you are asking. Its a major project.

 

how much lift do you have? and can you elaborate on your current setup?

 

the benefits are smoother ride, better climbing characteristics, ZERO axle wrap, better departure angle, the ability to easily decide and adjust your wheelbase, less strain on the unibody (on some setups) and of course....better flex.

 

I think polly performance has a 4 link kit for xj's

You do not need a rear coil spring conversion to put a larger axle under your jeep.

 

i know, but its a really good excuse to do it lol

 

i currently have no lift im stock for now but i figured if it was practical instead of a lift go for the suspension conversion

 

Staangs Fab sells a kit to do this, fairly simple to do but you need a welder. www.staangsfab.com I've seen his work and its bullet proof.

All you'll need is lift for the front and that kit for the rear then use stock springs in the rear i believe. Nets 6" total iirc.
