Suggestions for sourcing a V8 engine

Howdy Y'all,

Bought a thoroughly beaten to death XJ a few years ago and the motor has such bad blow-by that I can't stand to drive it with the windows down. Stink from the motor is horrendous. I've been wanting to install a used V8 from a donor car/truck such as a GM 5.3L or Magnum 5.2L but all the stuff I can find on ebay or junk yards seems suspect at best. Anyone have a suggestion for obtaining a donor motor? I really don't want to buy the whole wrecked car just to ensure I know what I'm getting.

thanks
David

car-part.com will let you source every salvage yard in the country’s inventory ! Also Craigslist is always chalked full of LS engines for swaps !

Around here, it's cheaper to buy a complete truck and scrap what you don't want than to get an engine/trans combo

And it's 'chocked' not chalked....lol

That is right. A used vehicle with a bad interior is cheaper than an engine out of a wrecking yard. Plus, you want it loaded with power accessories and cats. Here I can take a rig minus the motor to the crusher for free

After the OP finds a donor they should contact Lingenfelter for a kit:

This ^.

Though, something like a 5.3 with complete drivetrain can be found for relatively cheap around here.

Now, if you're looking at something in the 6.0L range (LQ4 or LQ9), then buying a complete vehicle is more likely.

Though, I've seen low mileage engines going for ~$1500 to $2k between car-part, ebay, local, etc.

Right now I know of someone local to me selling two slightly higher mileage LQ4's for $1k, and one low mileage LQ9 for $1450. Though, he seemed open to some offers.

I know someone who got lucky, and after parting out the vehicle it came from, ended up with a free low mile LQ9 AND money in his pocket. But that's EXTREMELY unlikely to happen for most.
