stumped with a weird noise from left tire area
i just bought a 96 cherokee 2dr and now all of a sudden there is a high pitch screeching noise that fluxuates like something is rubbing everytime the tire roatates. it does it from 5mph up to normal driving speeds. but when i hit the brake it immediately stops, then when i release the brake the noise comes immediately back. it is driving me nuts and i have no clue what it could be. i took off the tire and checked for anything loose but couldn't find anything. please help.

Were you able to identify the problem? I am still at a loss. Pulled the tire off and checked the bushings , they were good.

yea, the u joint was the first thing that came to mind. an easy test of wheel joints is to jack up a tire, grab it top and bottom and push and pull back and forth. if there is play in it, then your u joints are going.

Did you pull a drum? shoe could be hanging, spring could be broken etc. turn the wheel by hand on a jack stand, if you can hear it, remove wheel and turn the drum, if you can still hear it then you eliminate the wheel rubbing anything, then pull the drum, turn it, if you cant hear it its in the brakes, if you still hear it its in the axle.

I am starting to lean towards it being the brake. Since I just bought it I'm really not sure when they were last changed. They are in pretty rough shape with rust on them, so I'm gonna rfeplace them when I get payed next. Let ya'll know if it worked. Thanks for all the good input.

I had the same problem with my Jeep, one of the springs inside the drum broke, and my brake was rubbing (making the squeeling/scratching noise) and then when i hit the brakes, it went away because the pressure was keeping it from squeeling..
So that is my guess as to what it might be
