Default to stroke or not to stroke...

So my girlfriend and I are in the process of rebuilding the i6 motor from her 1996 Cherokee. We're kind of stuck right now... we have the 4.2 crank rods and injectors for a possible stroker... but since it will only be a daily driver, we were considering keeping the stock bore and crank but putting in a cam and higher compression pistons.

Now a question about the stroker option... the "poor man's" stroker calls for pistons that cost about $500 from summit. This price is ridiculous and is pretty much what is turning us away from the stroker.

We can get higher compression pistons for the 4.0 and keep stock bore and stroke, using the bigger injectors if necessary.

I'm kinda just asking for opinions here /shrug

Also the quote we got for the machine work (if we were to stroke it) was about $1000. It would be a few hundred less if we didn't stroke.

If your rebuilding it stroke it. There is no replacement for displacement.

Once the 4.2 dies in my YJ I am getting a stroker kit from 505 performance for it , doing a 4.0 head conversion which will be ported and it'll get fuel injected. The stock 4.2 crank will get cleaned inspected coated in oil and vaccum sealed in a bag and stored until I build a stroker out of the XJ's 4.0

I know that!!! I just got done with my 4.6.

But there's an option without going with expensive pistons.

What pistons did you use in your 4.6? How much were they. If we can get some pistons for less than or around $300 we'll stroke it.

The point is, I believe there is a recipe which doesn't require expensive pistons or machining.

Wouldn't it be just using regular 4.0l pistons with the 4.2l connecting rods and crank.
