Default Stock axles with 35s

So my 2000 XJ has 4.56 pinion gears in the stock axles (Dana 30 & 35 i think) and 35x12.50x15 BFG Mud Terrain KM2 tires.

I'm wondering what is the most cost effective way to not have to worry about snapping an axle.

I'm also wondering how much I should be worrying...

dont take it wheeling.
or
replace the front d30 with a high pinion d30 and alloy axles. replace the rear with a d44 or ford 8.8.

you should post pics of your axles to see which ones you have for sure.

They are tougher than they get credit for - they are not time bombs. However, how much beefing up you need depends on how you wheel and if you have or plan on lockers.

Agreed - post pics so we can see that rear axle. If you have a 8.25 in the rear, you have less to worry about

They used both, 35 with ABS.
I tried to run 35s on my old 35 with alloy shafts and first trip out snapped one and twisted the splines on the other. It was locked with 4.56s. I snapped a stock shaft on my 33s but I'm heavy footed and kinda crazy in the rocks.

Thanks for the input guys. There's so much more stuff I want to do with this thing; I've been searching for a set of 44s or 60s that will bolt up.... I guess I'll just drive it and keep looking.

dana 30 front and dana 35. you could have just said you have ABS and that would have been the other giveaway on the rear axle. front has 297x ujoints on it if your curious same as a D44. the front however is a weaker D30LP because it is on the weaker side of the gears.

A HP 30 would be a wise low-bck upgrade but you'll need new gears.

A Chrysler 8.35" with alloy shafts will handle 35's with a little common sense. Direct bolt in, just grab the u-bolts, plates, and drive shaft from the donor rig.

Yes a D44 would be better, but you'll pay alot more for one of those.

D60 isn't a good choice for a 35" tire, it's just too big and you'll drag it over everything.
