Default steel wheels or aluminum?

So I went 4 wheel parts the other day to get the pro comp steel wheels series 51 and the guy there told me that steel wheels we're not to good that he had a lot of people bringing the wheels back because they couldn't get balanced so he told me that I should get aluminum wheels, so I was wondering if anyone had those wheels and if yall had any problems with it? Thanks

That, is called a load of ****.

They're fine... Steel vs aluminum is really only a looks/ weight issue. I've always had steel wheels and never had an issue with balancing them other than ones I bent or had old worn tires on.

Aluminum wheels are lighter but crack rather than bend so on the trails most prefer steel because if they clip a rock then the lip will bend but can be hammered back in place.

That is all it was period more money in the salesman's pocket, commission!

Cost isn't a factor in my wheel choice I chose steel because of strength and them being able to bend instead of breaking like an alloy wheel. In fact go to Summit or Jegs and look at their steel wheels they look the same and cost less with free shipping. They have several different styles from name brand to their own branded look-a-likes. Buy 5 from them then shop local for cheaper tires or get some from them and mounted/balanced.

Baloney sandwich anyone? That guy was full of it. I agree with the guys, I have run both and like the steel for damage control. I currently have a 10 year old set of aluminum eagle alloys with no issue. Prior to that I used and abused the stock rims with 31's. When I did damage one, it was either repaired or swapped with a JY rim for cheap. I'm kind of planning to swap back to steel, but can't say the others gave me any trouble.

take an aluminum beer can and smash it on your forehead.
now take a steel can and do the same.

once you regain consciousness, you will realize steel is real.

4wheelparts has 15" D-windows on sale for $42.

Yet, you guys will pay upwards of $450 for a 35" tire and mount it to a cheap-*** Chinese steel wheel and spend the rest of the day scratching your asses trying to figure out why it out of balance.....or better yet....out of round.

Don't rag on the salesman unless you were there.

I can rag on the sale guy every time i go to 4wheelparts its all about the up sale. I run those procomp d windows with 35"s. Got them from 4wheelparts because i get a club discount. Like any tire over 33s it took some braking down and re balancing to get it right. Now i run down the highway at 80mph feels like I'm in my chrysler 300.

So, take one made of wood and one carved of stone and the results will be the same as steel.

Guess I should go carve myself some wheels?

Funny post, bad analogy. Steel and aluminum both can be used to make quality wheels. I really think the factor at play here is price. Go cheap and you will get what you pay for with either material. So, pick your poison.

I just got rid of a set of steel wheels for that very reason. Mine were AR767's. I went to Ultra aluminum alcoa-style wheels. Why? Because aluminum wheels are spun on a lathe and will therefore run true.

I had measurable runout on 3 of the 4 steel wheels I got with the Jeep...AND the brand new wheel I'd purchased as a spare. I always thought of American Racing as a quality brand...but the dial indicator don't lie.
