Steel Flare - Deflection Ability

As the title states, for those running steel flares, how do they do at actually doing the job of a flare? Just about every picture i find is of a perfectly clean rig posing for the flare shot, but none of them actually dirty to see how well they deflect mud and debris. Most of these steel flares, do not go all the way down to the bottom crease of the body line. The largest(longest) flare i have found is Rusty's. I am specifically looking for photos. Im currently debating at the Dirtbound Flares, as they are the only ones who make an MJ specific set for the rear.
