Starting a build
I picked up a 97 XJ 2 door over the weekend. 110k original miles. Got from original owner who did not abuse it. Besides regular wear and tear and possibly a crazy ex judging by the fist shaped dent in the hood its pretty solid. I already have light bars, a cb, and some interior items from my last truck. Where i"m at a standstill is building from the ground up. I planned to go in this order. What would you recommend? Lift is 4.5" rough country.

i would recommend anything but Rough Country. If you're on a budget look at Rusty's, Rubicon Express, or Zone.

Not a tight budget. I was told the Rough country was a decent one. Thanks for the insight. |
I used Rubicon Express and found them on sale for about 1/2 price , it rides pretty good it's not a Cadillac but it's a 4x4 jeep Cherokee and you will need a slip joint eliminator at 4.5" lift .

It currently has the Chrysler 8.25. Im on the fence as to if I want to regear it myself or replace the whole axle. From what I’ve seen in the FB Xj forums I can buy a used axle for around 150-200. Today I’m making a truck to the salvage yard. I want to try and get a few things. My buddy hit the jackpot and found an Xj with currie axles, lift, track bar, ucas,lcas. All for like $120 |

First, what is planned use, daily driver, weekend warrior, or mostly Off-road?
Second, what size tires do you plan on running? Third, if you do regear, will you feel comfortable doing it your self? I would take care of axles & lockers first. That is if you will need to change anything depending on useage.useage next, I would do armor depending upon how you are going to be using it. Then lift, and wheel & tires. Just my thoughts. |

Just my thoughts. it will be my daily driver with a lorn if off roading as I go to the mountains a lot to trout fish and such. A lot of the roads get pretty nasty once you get up high. 33’s for now. I have armor. A guy I work with ordered a full armor set from some company for like $700 then decided he wasn’t going to continue building. I have the tools to regear at my buddies shop. I am up for the challenge but if it’s relativeky affordable to have someone else do it I may go that route. |
